About me

Andrea Horta-Barba

Neuropsychologist

Specialized in the fields of clinical neuropsychology and forensic neuropsychology.

I possess extensive clinical and research experience in both areas, a strong academic background, and active participation in leading professional societies.

Education

I hold a degree in Psychology from the University of Barcelona. I completed my specialization with two Master’s degrees: the first in Neuropsychology and the second in Legal, Forensic, and Criminological Psychopathology , both with honors. I also obtained a PhD (Cum Laude) from the Facultad de Medicina de la Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona.

Throughout my career, I have consolidated my training through various expert qualifications , including those in Clinical Neuropsychology and Legal and Forensic Psychology, both awarded by the Colegio Oficial de Psicólogos de Cataluña (COPC). In parallel, I have expanded my institutional experience , serving as coordinator of the Forensic Neuropsychology area of the COPC , secretary of the Sociedad Española de Neuropsicología Jurídica y Forense (SENJYF) , and member of the Neuropsychology section of the Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN).

Professional Experience

Since 2010, my career has been developed in the neurology unit of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP) , where I have worked as a neuropsychologist, combining clinical practice with research, active participation in multiple clinical trials and the coordination of large-scale projects

Between 2015 and 2020, I served as the Spanish Coordinator of the European Huntington’s Disease Network (EHDN), leading Spain’s participation in multinational clinical trials and ensuring compliance with high ethical and scientific standards.

Simultaneously, I have maintained a continuous practice as a clinical and forensic neuropsychologist in various private institutions (Dexeus, 3 Torres, CDINC, among others), where I have assessed, supported, and provided rehabilitation programs to patients with neurological disorders in diverse settings. My forensic experience includes preparing expert reports in civil, labor, and criminal cases, as well as appearing as an expert witness in court.

From 2020 to 2025, I was the Clinical Coordinator at the Escuela de Neuropsicología y Patología del Lenguaje (ECNPL) of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau , where I supervised therapeutic planning and coordinated interdisciplinary services for patients with cognitive impairments. I combined this role with my previous position, held since 2010, in the Movement Disorders Unit of the same hospital, where I was responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and follow-up of patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, PSP, MSA, and Alzheimer’s, among others.

I recently became the Head of the Neuropsychology Program specializing in dementia risk communication at the BarcelonaBeta Research Center (BBRC) of the Fundación Pasqual Maragall (FPM) . There, I coordinate clinical research programs focused on dementia risk communication and the development of preventative interventions. My work includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of strategies for disseminating information about the risk, the psychological impact of knowing about it, the motivation for lifestyle changes, and the resulting cognitive or functional improvements; as well as coordinating multidisciplinary teams and conducting detailed analysis of the results obtained.

Collaborations and Publications

Since 2015, I have collaborated with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), the Universitat de València, and the COPC, among others, where I work as an associate professor and collaborator in subjects and courses specializing in neurodegenerative diseases and dementias, as well as neurological disorders and forensic neuropsychology: violence, capacity, malingering, etc. I am also a supervisor of undergraduate theses

I have participated as a speaker and presenter at various conferences, workshops, and training events. My work has been presented at nationally and internationally renowned forums, such as the congresses of the Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN) and the Movement Disorders Society (MDS), among others. In these presentations, I have primarily addressed topics related to cognitive and behavioral disorders associated with neurological pathology and the application of neuropsychology in the legal and forensic fields.

I have collaborated on more than seventy articles in specialized publications and I am the author and co-author of book chapters on neurodegenerative and psychiatric pathologies.
